The bookstore was established in the Seattle metropolitan area in 1976 and was the first anthroposophical endeavor in the northwest. From out of its humble beginnings was generated the interest in founding the first Waldorf school in the Seattle area. What followed was the establishment of the nonprofit Friends of Anthroposophy, now known as the Center for Anthroposophical Endeavors (CFAE), as a way to build interest and cultural organizations in anthroposophy through offering books, lectures, and workshops. Over its 40 years of serving the local community, the bookstore has taken on many transformations, from personably delivered books to being open by appointment to a brick and mortar bookstore open to the public. Since 2016 the bookstore has been online and now has a global reach. 2018 saw the closure of the physical store and expansion into smaller school stores (InSchool Store Program) as well as new offerings (listed here) that are supportive of schools and our mission.

Adult Training Courses
Most schools that offer adult training have neither the ability nor the desire to have their own bookstore for their students. The Adult Training Course Listing gives these schools the ability to have a virtual bookstore that is branded as their own, offering everything needed for the student and their course work all in one place and with a modest discount for their students as well.
The benefits of a listing on Rudolf Steiner Bookstore for the schools are as follows:
- School branded pages and content
- Web link back to school’s own website
- Main school page, course page and class page with class books and material
- Most books include free internet resources (see: Free Book Resources)
- Optional downloadable content only for students of the school or for specific classes
- 15% discount for students with provided school discount code
The Adult Training Course Listing is a supportive program for schools that would like to have their own place for students to find their books and material. There are no requirements for schools to direct their students to their presence on Rudolf Steiner Bookstore. It is completely voluntary.

InSchool Store Program
Many schools today would like to have a store to supply their parent community with products that reflect the values of the school and curriculum. For most schools the reality of the cost in inventory, resources and time to manage a store of their own has made this ideal impractical. The InSchool Store Program is designed to make it a possibility for schools to have a store without the cost requirements and still have the benefits.
The benefits of being a part of the InSchool Store Program are as follows:
- All inventory is handled through Rudolf Steiner Bookstore.
- All sales are through a self-checkout kiosk.
- Inventory is mostly based upon what the school would like to offer.
- 10% of all sales is donated to the school.
- The school store is branded with the school’s name.
The InSchool Store Program is still being tested for its viability. The program has been in effect for one year as of 2019 at one school with great enthusiasm for it and is now installed at one other. As of 2020 the program is planning to expand in the Seattle area and will consider other schools outside of the Northwest on a school by school basis.
